Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) (09/05/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (all over the place). Red Clover always has leaflets immediately beneath the flower head. And also always has chevron markings on the leaves (although they are quite faint on this specimen). Other clovers don't have the former but can someitmes have the latter!

This is a developing flower - the long brown/purple bits are calyx teeth and you can just see the flowers emerging around the sides. It's not Zig-Zag clover beecause this has leaflets below the flowerhead which Zig-Zag lack.

Looking mid-way down the leaves, Zig-Zag differs in that the veins kind of curl downwards at the very edge so they meet the edge at abvout 90 degrees, they don't continue to the edge like this Red Clover.
